We are delighted to present the online premiere of ‘FLARE’, a new work by Donald Butler commissioned by LUX Scotland as part of We Contain Multitudes.
‘FLARE’ reflects on artist Donald Butler’s early art making growing up in the shadow of Grangemouth, until recently the location of Scotland’s largest oil refinery. Consisting of scanned 35mm photographs, early drawings, throw-away pieces of writing, instant photography and archival material, ‘FLARE’ seeks to draw parallels between industrial and emotional processes and to queer typical narratives of industrial heritage.

In May we will premiere Wei Zhang’s new work The Silver Tide (2025) as part of our ONE WORK series. This online screening will be accompanied by a recorded discussion between Wei Zhang and David Upton, Public Programme Manager at LUX Scotland, and a newly commissioned text responding to the work by film writer and curator, Cici Peng.
Tickets are now available for MAXIMUM TILT, a new three-day festival of artists’ moving image programmed by artists Andrew Black and Anne-Marie Copestake, taking place during Midsummer 2026.
